Task Manager & Activity Monitor: How to Force Close Frozen Apps

Every computer user eventually encounters the dreaded moment: an application freezes completely, refusing to close, ignoring mouse clicks, and locking up your screen. When a program stops responding, panicking or hard-rebooting the computer is unnecessary. Instead, modern operating systems provide dedicated diagnostic and control utilities designed to terminate stuck software instantly: Task Manager on Windows and Activity Monitor on macOS.

1. Task Manager (Windows)

The Windows Task Manager is a powerful command center that provides real-time data about your computer’s performance and running processes.

• How to Open It: The quickest way to launch Task Manager is by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc simultaneously. Alternatively, pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and selecting “Task Manager” works as a reliable backup.
• Force Closing a Frozen App:
  1. In the “Processes” tab, locate the frozen application in the list.
  2. Click on the application to select it.
  3. Click the “End Task” button in the top right corner (or right-click the app name and select End Task). The frozen window will instantly shut down.
• Performance Monitoring: Beyond killing stuck apps, Task Manager features tabs displaying live graphs of your CPU, RAM, disk, and network utilization, helping you identify which programs are consuming too many resources.

2. Activity Monitor (macOS)

On Apple computers, the equivalent diagnostic tool is called Activity Monitor.

• How to Open It: Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight search, type “Activity Monitor,” and hit Enter.
• Force Closing a Frozen App:
  1. Look through the list of active processes to find the unresponsive program (it will often be labeled as “Not Responding” in red text).
  2. Click on the application to highlight it.
  3. Click the “X” button located in the upper-left corner of the Activity Monitor toolbar.
  4. A confirmation prompt will appear asking if you want to Quit or Force Quit the process. Select Force Quit to immediately terminate the application.

3. Why Apps Freeze and When to Worry

Most application freezes are temporary glitches caused by heavy momentary workloads, waiting on a slow internet connection, or running out of available RAM. However, if a specific program consistently freezes every time you open it, it may be corrupted, outdated, or conflicting with another system component, signaling that you should reinstall or update the software.
